The twisted dancers first appeared in Paxton's work back in 1993. Paxton had a dream that three dancers, resembling flowing bits of cloth twisted tightly in the middle, watched as he was in a pool of water with a giant elephant. These dancers were so elegant and graceful that when awaking Paxton immediately sketched them as not to loose the image. Because their heads were very complex and hard to remember Paxton substituted fruits and vegetable as he sketched, creating an image that has reoccurred many times in his work through the years.
